WELCOME TO McCann Lighting!
My name is Mike McCann and I am a lighting enthusiast. To put it simply, I am fascinated by, and collect, light fixtures. I collect street lights, fluorescent fixtures, various HID fixtures, and components (ballasts, lamps, photocontrols, replacement parts, etc.) associated with these fixtures. I started off collecting street lights and over the past decade have developed a diverse collection of luminaires. A great deal of my acquisitions I owe to various other lighting enthusiasts and friends whom I have met through lighting forums and websites which are listed on the "Links" page.
How did you get into Lighting?
I am asked this question by just about everyone I meet who learns I am a lighting enthusiast. "What is so interesting to you about lighting?" and "Why are you interested in lights?" are common questions I'm asked. As for what is interesting, everything about lighting is interesting to me! The lamps, the ballasts, the refractors, and just the fixture designs themselves are all interesting to me. My main focus of interest is with discharge lamps, which include HID and fluorescent lamps. Now as for why I am interested, I've been asking myself that question as long as anyone else. I honestly have no idea what started my obsession with lighting other than the fact that it started out with a primary interest in street lighting, all other lighting taking second place.
How do you get your lights?
This question usually follows the questions above. People I speak to are always curious as to how I get my hands on these lights, especially street lights, which are not reasonably easy to get a hold of for the average person. My lighting comes from a variety of sources. Some of my best pieces have come from other enthusiasts featured in the "Links" section of this site. Others have come from online sources like eBay or Craigslist. Other times it's been word of mouth from friends or fixtures saved from school or work. I have also gotten a fair number of fluorescent fixtures and lamps from a thrift store chain run by Habitat for Humanity called "Re-Store", which is on the idea of a salvation army or Goodwill. I've had quite a bit of luck getting nice fluorescent lights at very good prices from there and they are my regular source for fluorescent fixtures.
What is the objective of this website?
This website has a few objectives. The first is to showcase my collection (particularly the street lights) in detail in a museum-like manner to inform and educate others about the evolution of street lighting and the many variations created by manufacturers over the years. With the current situation of LED lighting taking over all aspects of the lighting industry, legacy lighting will soon be forgotten by most. the exception being individuals like me, who strive to keep legacy lighting alive and well. As a lighting enthusiast, it is my desire to obtain and showcase examples of vintage light fixtures for both historical and educational purposes.
It is my hope that you will find this website to be of some form of value and that you enjoy reading through and viewing the pictures within this site.
